About the text

AuthorThe text signs itself. The forty-fourth chaupai reads "Shri Haridas kahai aru gavai", and the first closing doha names Haridas again — so the poet gave his name as Haridas. Which Haridas is not established. IMPORTANT: this chalisa is very widely attributed to Tulsidas on devotional websites. That attribution is wrong — the Ram Chalisa is not among his recognised works and no scholarly edition of Tulsidas contains it.
DatingNot established. The text carries a poet’s signature but no date, and we found no printing we could date earlier than the compilations used here.
LanguageDevotional Hindi with Awadhi and Braj colouring

Variant readings

Editions differ in a few lines. We give both readings with their sources rather than picking one silently.
